It's Sharper Than You Think
“For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” -Hebrews 4:12
You may not be able to understand the bible, but the bible understands you. The bible holds a mirror up to our souls and confronts us with exactly who we are and who we are becoming.
There are a lot of metaphors about scripture being a lamp unto our path, about it being sweet nourishment for the soul. It is “pure milk” (1 Peter 2:2). It is an “imperishable seed” (1 Peter 1:23).
Here though, we get a just as powerful, and much more dangerous image of God’s word. Scripture is not only meant to fill us up, but it is also there to shave off or cut out whatever is holding us back from pursuing God fully. When you dig into scripture, scripture digs a few things out of you. When you open up the bible, God doesn’t show you characters and inspiration words as much as he shows you yourself. But it is only after we see ourselves for who we truly are that we can move forward to who God wants us to become.
So before you open the scriptures, beware. His word is sharp in the best way.
PRAYER: Heavenly Father, thank you for your word. I thank you that it nourishes my soul, and that it also refines my character. I pray that as I continue to dig into your word, that your word would continue to dig into me and form me more and more into your likeness.
